In the article, "Should Everyone Get a Trophy?" by Lauren Tarshis, she talked about how kids get a trophy just for showing up to team practices. Our school system decided more than a decade ago to pass kids on to the next grade regardless of how successful they were on their report card. Do you think kids should fail?
Being Held Back
Not being held back is effecting everyone. The education average has gone down in every area that they no longer hold students back. Do you notice the lack of initiative kids have now? Well there is no reason for students to have any initiative anymore. Being able to move on no matter how much you’re actually learning is causing this.
Allot of Parents ponder the question of why their kids don’t care about school or why they have lower grades than they did growing up. If you don’t have to have any initiative to do something then why would you? You will “progress” to the next grade no matter what and everyone knows that, Therefore you don’t feel obligated to try. You may not know half of the stuff the person sitting next to them but it won’t make a difference now a days.
A better education equals a better job. this statement has been told to us many times growing up, but for the last few years kids have stopped worrying about their education. If kids don’t even think about their education how are they supposed to get a decent job. The good jobs in our society will be difficult spots to fill as barely any kids will qualify for them.
Lots of things are handed to kids in todays society including passing grades. If a child has a plan of going to university, college or even getting a real job they need to know real soon that it wont be handed to them. The real world doesn't give you your job or a higher up education its something you need to put effort into and work for. Say there is a kid who dreams of being a lawyer.. they will need to know you cant fail and get that good of a job. they may not realize that they have to actually earn that and they will then be devastated
On the other side though yes i do understand some opinions about self esteem and other issues if you get held back. honestly though its easier to get through that as opposed to being told you cant get a certain job or get into a good school. You want your children to be confident but if you earn something it makes it something you can be way more proud about. In that case their self esteem will go up if anything it just may be hard in the beginning.
That though is only a few of my opinions on why I believe that kids should be held back. It is a benefit for everyone, their confidence should go up. Your child will gain initiative. It will help them to understand the real world. Also they will make it through much more in life with a better education and a good attitude towards school. So think about it… shouldn't we continue holding them back for theirs and the society's benefits.
